The park, which is shared between the states of Virginia and Kentucky, features a massive canyon that’s been carved out over hundreds and hundreds of years. Standing over this vista, one can easily understand why Breaks is known as the Grand Canyon of the South.

Few people realize that Breaks Interstate Park has a designated elk viewing area with a handful of wildlife viewing stations.

At one time, the pastures where the elk freely roam were once part of a strip mine operation. With careful restoration efforts, there are now 400 yards of beautiful grasslands for the elk.

The viewing station can be reached by taking the dirt road from the Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure Center. The platform is shaded and the seats can accommodate 25 people.

In addition to elk, visitors may also see grassland birds, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and, on occasion, a black bear. How magical!
