When it comes to the most nostalgic of children’s toys, there is nothing quite as comforting as a teddy bear. While most of us grew up with these soft stuffies and feel as though they have been around forever, they didn’t even make their official debut until the turn of the 20th century, when – according to legend – they were created for the most surprising of reasons. So, if you’ve ever wondered: where was the teddy bear invented? We’ve got all the answers.
The year was 1905, and then-President Theodore Roosevelt was staying at the iconic Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs, which he would stay at once a year during his legendary hunting trips.

Thanks to previous visits, President Roosevelt took a liking to the hotel and staff, and the team felt a mutual admiration, which is what allegedly lead to what is the most iconic children’s toy invention of all time.

As legend has it after President Roosevelt had an unsuccessful day of hunting, the maids at the Hotel Colorado wanted to do something to cheer him up and pieced together scraps to create a small and cuddly bear-looking creature.

Not only did this kind gesture touch the president’s heart, but his luck turned around as well, as his following days of bear hunting proved to be successful.

When he returned home to Washington D.C., President Roosevelt presented the thoughtful gift to his daughter, Alice, who took a liking to it immediately and named it “Teddy.”

Whether or not this is factual has been a longtime argument (other theories include the teddy bear being invented in Germany). Still, we Coloradans know the truth: this wholesome and nostalgic stuffed animal is a tried-and-true Colorado native!
