The trail to the hot springs can be found along the highway east of Kooskia, Idaho, and southwest of Missoula, Montana. Following US-12 east, you’ll find the parking lot on the left side of the road that connects to the trail. It’s located right where Weir Creek and the Lochsa River meet.

After parking at the trailhead - be sure to get there early since it’s known to fill up - you’ll follow the trail as it meanders alongside Weir Creek. Surrounded by towering pine trees and the tranquil sounds of nature, it won’t be long until you feel completely immersed by the forest.

The trail is well-defined and, at only a half-mile-long, it’s suitable for hikers of all skill levels. It winds along a narrow ridge, though, so definitely be cautious when traversing the trail. It’s also known to become slippery, so bring good shoes!

After passing a few campsites, you’ll get your first good view of the main soaking pool. Consisting completely of stone and camouflaged among the trees, the pool’s natural vibe is everything you could dream of and more.

The main pool is the largest in the area and boasts a water temperature that ranges between 100-105 degrees, depending on the season. Complete with rock walls and a gravel bottom, you could pack about eight to ten people inside of it. If it’s too crowded, you can always seek out the smaller soaking areas located along the creek.

Weir Creek Hot Springs is open year-round and it looks especially fantastic when surrounded by snow. Just be prepared for the hiking conditions if you do decide to visit in winter. As always, practice good stewardship when visiting the hot springs by packing out everything that you bring and picking up any garbage that you may see.
