It’s time for the annual Steeplechase of Charleston, an annual tradition in the Lowcountry. And this year, in spite of all that 2020 has taken from us, the races will take place as usual. The organizers have modified the rules of engagement accordingly so that everyone can have an enjoyable and safe outing in the midst of the pandemic. Here’s what to expect on race day:
The Steeplechase of Charleston will take place this Sunday, November 15, 2020, at its usual venue, the Stono Ferry Race Track just south of Charleston.

Equal parts picnic and horse racing, the event has been in existence since 1986, when the first Charleston Cup took place (now called Steeplechase of Charleston).

Always a rousing fun time for all, the Steeplechase features five races among throughbred horses. The stakes are always high for the racers - and side bets are a sure bet among those watching from the rails.

Amid the pandemic, this year’s event will look a bit different than in previous years though. For starters, tickets sales are being limited to 50% of capacity. And only those who purchase a parking pass for tailgating will be in attendance. All ticket holders will need to be attached to a tailgate party.

The dedicated tailgate spaces will each accommodate up to five guests and all guests will be encouraged to stay with their tailgate “pod” of people during the event. You can still visit other tailgates as long as no more than 10 individuals are gathered in one place at one time.

This being said, the event will still feature a hospitality tents (where masks are mandated). And an open-air vendor village will allow for some serious shopping.
