Nothing says Halloween quite like a cemetery, and you can tour one of the oldest and most haunted in Texas this October. On the 17th of next month, a local historian in Galveston is leading a walk through Old City Cemetery, which dates to the early 1800s and harbors an estimated 1500 graves.

Located on Broadway Street in Galveston, the place known as “Old City Cemetery” is actually a complex consisting of seven separate graveyards. An estimated 1500 souls were laid to rest on these grounds, some as early as 1839.

A number of the deceased perished in the Great Storm of 1900. Others died for various reasons, whether from natural causes or something more sinister. Keep an eye out for all the different architectural styles such as Greek, Italian and Renaissance, as well as a vast array of religious symbols.

On October 17, local historian and author Kathleen Maca is leading a tour of the graveyard. With more than 40 years of experience researching historic cemeteries, she’s a wealth of knowledge about the celebrities, murder victims, veterans, and other famous figures buried here.

Uneven pathways weave through endless rows of tombstones and mausoleums, many unmarked. Even in broad daylight, visitors have reported paranormal activity – not a surprise considering just how much unfinished business is likely in a cemetery this large.
