Everyone who loves North Carolina will wholeheartedly agree: the Tar Heel State has it all. But none of us likely expected the “all” to include a small town with a wonderful little park that includes a free zoo, too! Only in North Carolina, right?

Welcome to the tiny town of Windsor, located in the Inner Banks of North Carolina.

Wikimedia Commons/Indy beetle There are many reasons to visit this historic community that is known for its roots as an original home of the Tuscarora — an Iroquois Native American tribe established in the area long before the arrival of Europeans. Aside from the rich history involving the Tuscarora, Windsor is also home to the popular town-owned and operated treehouse village where you can rent a rustic treehouse along the scenic Cashie River.

But these are, by far, not the only reasons to gas up the car and head to Windsor.

Google Maps/Maggie Andrews The town also has a free park and mini-zoo where even the grown ups on this day trip will feel like kids again!

The playground is suitable for kids of all ages.

Google Maps/Kalene Reiner It’s located at 103 N York Street and only a short walk from the Cashie River.

Pack a lunch and bring the kiddos for some quality play time on the playground equipment.

From waterfowl to other feathered creatures and more…

The friendly residents here are adorable (like this ostrich with super long eyelashes)!

The longhorn sheep are a sure bet for hamming it up for great photos. Many people will go their entire life without seeing a longhorn sheep in person.

As if a free zoo isn’t enough of an enticement, the park is next door to the Cashie Wetlands Walk.

Google Maps/Bobbie Wright The boardwalk trail leads visitors through a true wetlands habitat with interpretive signage throughout. Explore the swamp underneath a thick canopy of shade all the way to the Cashie River.

At Livermon Park and Mini-Zoo, you won’t empty your wallet shelling out dough for entrance fees. It’s all absolutely free!

TripAdvisor/dukefan86 The city even offers free use of canoes and life vests so you can explore the Cashie River.

You’ll find it all in the eastern North Carolina town of Windsor, found in the Inner Banks.
