Visit The Historic Sutro Baths Ruins In Northern California

San Francisco is such a unique destination, filled with history, culture, and iconic views of the Bay. This historic destination is rich in local history, but it’s also a fantastic place to soak up some views. It’s a spot that should be on every SF bucket list, so read on to learn more.

Located in San Francisco’s Richmond District, the Sutro Baths are a destination teeming with local history and natural beauty. Consider it a must-see when exploring Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

It may be hard to believe from the looks of it today, but at the time of its opening in 1890 the Sutro Baths were the world’s largest indoor swimming establishment. Consisting of seven pools, the baths were a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

The baths were a passion project of former city mayor and wealthy businessman Adolph Sutro. Altogether, the establishment contained six saltwater pools and a single freshwater pool. The saltwater pools were filled directly by ocean water during high tide, and refreshed via an underground pump during low tide.

Considered a phenomenal feat in engineering, the baths were definitely seen as a glamorous destination. However, they proved to be unsuccessful commercially, and they were slated for destruction during the 1960s. Ultimately, a fire destroyed the baths before they could even be demolished.

Today, the ruins serve as a reminder of what once was. Situated on a small beach inlet right below the historic Cliff House, they are a popular destination in Golden Gate NRA for the outstanding views.

Finding the baths isn’t hard at all. They are located on the north end of Ocean Beach, right where Geary Boulevard and the Great Highway converge. Some say that sunset is the absolute best time to visit Sutro, and we can’t say we disagree, although there certainly isn’t a bad time to visit!
