Pennsylvania’s trails often lead to sensational destinations, although some may prove much more challenging than others. Turkey Path Trail in Pennsylvania, for example, is brimming with natural beauty – from views of Pine Creek Gorge at the top and at the bottom to waterfalls. However, it’s also quite a difficult trail that requires some preparation.

The Turkey Path Trail, in Leonard Harrison State Park in Wellsboro, leads to the bottom of Pine Creek Gorge, more commonly known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.

While Turkey Path Trail can get really busy (the views are second to none), the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) cautions that the trail is difficult.

You’ll be traveling one mile down to the bottom of the gorge and back up again. The pathway can be steep, and you’ll face rocky, rough terrain and even slippery surfaces at times.

Typically well maintained, the path features wooden stairs, handrails, and observation decks along the way.

You’ll likely find the trek down to the bottom of Pine Creek Gorge is much easier than the climb back up. However, hikers do describe the journey down as “moderate.”

Just be ready to really get a workout when you’re climbing back up. Before you do head back to the top, you’ll come across several waterfalls on your way to the bottom of the gorge.

At the bottom of the gorge, you’ll come to Pine Creek, where you’ll be treated to sensational views. (Crossing the creek isn’t possible, so you’ll have to return to the beginning of the trail the same way you came.)
