Those of us who love animals know that love often comes with heartache, from saying goodbye to our beloved friends at the end of their lives to the heart-wrenching stories of abuse and neglect we often hear. Unfortunately, many animals – both farm animals and companion animals – live lives of utter terror. This farm and sanctuary in New Hampshire, however, provides a safe and loving refuge for some of the lucky ones who have been rescued from abuse and neglect.
Tucked in Haverhill, Tomten Farm and Sanctuary has become a safe place for rescued animals, a haven where they can heal and learn to trust humans again.

Since it first opened in 2014, the sanctuary has been an all-volunteer organization, and it’s always looking for additional volunteers.

If you don’t have the time to volunteer, however, you can still visit the sanctuary to meet some of its friendly residents and to learn about the hard work and heart that goes into running Tomten Farm.

While tours are currently temporarily suspended due to the ongoing pandemic, they are traditionally announced on the sanctuary’s Facebook page.

Until the tours return, however, you can still learn more about the sanctuary that’s home to donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, and goats.

Each of the residents has his or her own name, personality, and inspiring tale of overcoming neglect and abuse. Beatrice Poppins Braymore and Figaro Brayburn, for example, are donkeys who were rescued from auction and certain death.

Norberto Pantaloné and Niccoló Nubiano, goats and best buds for life, were both saved from a livestock auction.

Tomten Farm and Sanctuary also offers a free program that matches individuals with one of the animals. The People Project allows volunteers to develop a one-on-one relationship with one of the rescued animals.
