Flowing right through the heart of downtown Boise, the Boise River is the ultimate source of recreation for locals and visitors alike. Not only can you float in it, swim in it, and fish in it, but you can surf on it, as well. The Boise Whitewater Park is one of the best artificial river surfing waves in the world, and it makes it easier than ever to get your surf on in the middle of the state’s most urban city centers.
The Boise Whitewater Park is a hot spot of wave-riding fun on the Boise River. First opened in 2012, it’s quickly become an iconic destination for surfers, kayakers, and boogie boarders.

Known officially as the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation Boise Whitewater Park, the “final phase” of the park’s opening was finished last summer. This second phase of construction included adding four wave-shaping structures over .5-mile of the Boise River.

Today, the park contains mechanized waves, drop structures, and a variety of boulders that create smaller “play waves.” There are also additional seating and viewing areas for hanging out in, plus a new park plaza.

When planning a visit to the park, be sure to pay attention to the Wave Shape Schedule. Depending on what day you visit, the waves may be shaped more for either surfing or kayaking. The official entrance to the park can be found right next to Idaho River Sports, on the Boise side of the river.
