There’s no shortage of great hiking trails in Vermont, but it’s easy to get complacent with searching for new trails and hikes. Don’t just re-hike the well-knowns; instead, check out the Styles Peak via Long Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest near the town of Peru. This hike is on the more challenging side, but it is also doable with kids and has a wonderful pay off at the top. Let’s start with the views from the top. The peak has room for a few hikers to enjoy the stunning vista out overlooking the pristine VT landscape.

This out-and-back trail is rated as moderate, and although it’s only three miles roundtrip, there are a few aspects that certainly make this trail no hop, skip, and a jump. Lots of roots and narrow paths and a steep incline towards the peak make this trail more like moderate plus difficulty.

Ascending to the top lookout is a wonderful hiking experience as you make your way out of the dark forest and out onto the rocky ledges where you’ll gaze blissfully out into the open.

The trail is dog friendly and can be completed by kids, and the trail is best conditioned for hiking in the late summer. Tip: late summer (mid August and later) will spare you from the pesky bugs at the top.
