Picturesque views abound in upstate New York, but it’s hard to beat the Catskill Mountain Scenic Byway when it comes to enjoying the best of the northeast’s landscapes. Fifty-two miles of rolling hills and gorgeous mountain views guide drivers as they wind through the Catskills, wondering what kind of scenery the next turn might hold. But don’t take my word for it; here are just a few looks at the beautiful terrain you’ll be greeted with on your journey.

This particular stretch of Route 28 is the perfect length for a relaxed afternoon cruise, and it’s only around an hour south of Albany (and about two hours north of New York City).

Break up your trip with a stop in one of a few mountain towns scattered along Route 28. Andes, which sits on the southeast border of Delaware County, provides a charming detour of eating, drinking, shopping and exploring in the heart of the Catskills.

Travelers can enter the scenic byway from either of two gateways to the east and west. The east gateway is about 12 miles west of Exit 19 on I-87, and the west gateway is about 33 miles east of Exit 14W on I-88.

If you enter the byway via the east gateway (or make it all the way from the west), enjoy an easy drive along Ulster County’s Ashokan Reservoir, which, in addition to providing a spectacular backdrop for passersby, also functions as one of New York City’s water sources.

The mountains are far from the only attraction for tourists passing through the region; the towns of Olive, Shandaken, Middletown and Andes add tons of their own adventures along the way. Put it all together, and you’ve got the perfect day trip, maybe even a weekend-long tour of towns with stellar mountain overlooks. It’s time to start planning your next fall road trip!
