There are many small towns across North Dakota. Pretty much every single one of them has at least one church, each full of their own stories as they’ve watched generations of locals grow, pray, and bring their own future families there. Each of these places is special in its own way, but this small-town church in North Dakota is unlike any other. You’d be more likely to find one like this in a European city than in a tiny prairie town, yet here it is:
Hague, North Dakota doesn’t look unlike many other small towns across the prairie. Only around 70 people live there and it has a quiet, tight-knit community. The name comes from the Dutch city of The Hague.

One thing that easily stands out in Hague is the soaring spires of the Catholic church in town. It’s hard to miss this structure when it towers over everything around it.

That church is St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a stunning sight indeed. The original church here was built in 1906 but after an unfortunate fire, rebuilt into this in 1929.

The inside is breathtaking. Over a hundred paintings and statues of angels can be found here and there are art pieces from the late 1800s within its walls. The stained glass is also gorgeous.

Many people find the altar to be one of the most eye-catching things, with so much detail and careful preservation over the years.

Nearby the church is the Old St. Mary’s Cemetery, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the final resting place of the early pioneers of the area. This and the church hold a lot of history and are worth visiting.
