Not all works of art are hanging on the walls of museums and galleries. Some are right under our noses – and The Church of the Immaculate Conception is proof. A true architectural gem, the church is absolutely stunning. There’s really no other way to describe it than a work of art. Take a look:

Located in West Terre Haute, The Church of the Immaculate Conception has been described as a majestic limestone structure filled with beautiful paintings, stained glass, sculpture, and art.

Brimming with as much history as beauty, construction of the church began back in 1886. Building the Italian Renaissance-style church was no easy feat – the exterior wasn’t completed until 1891!

Just as much care went into the construction of the church’s interior, which took another 16 years to complete.

Members of the church’s General Council, under the leadership of Mother Mary Cleophas and General Councilor Sister Mary Alma O’Donald, were tasked with decorating the interior of the church. In order to get inspiration, the two sisters visited numerous churches throughout Europe.

After returning from abroad, the sisters sought out artisans and craftsmen to transform The Church of the Immaculate Conception into a sacred place of worship.

All of the sisters’ hard work paid off. Religious dignitaries, including Bishop Francis Silas Chatard, and countless other guests poured into the church on Oct. 23, 1907, when it was consecrated.
