One of the most special times of the year in Maine is upon us! This state was basically made for the celebration of holidays that take place in the winter and no holiday is as beautifully honored as Christmas. And while many of us are getting excited for the lights and decorations going up all over the state, there are a few things that will be undeniably different this year. As we muddle through another holiday that looks vastly different than last year, here are a few things we imagine must be going through the heads of Mainers!
- “Finally a year I don’t have to worry about layering up for the local tree lighting!”

But can we all agree that getting ready for that when it’s cold out isn’t actually all that much fun? Especially when trying to get kids to bundle up properly. Yeah, this year we’re okay with a short break from all of that.
- “At least we don’t have to convince the family to come to Maine this year.”

But, inevitably, we relent and get in the car to visit people elsewhere. This year, we finally have an excuse to skip the argument and stay put.
- “Is the big guy going to wear a mask? If he doesn’t is there a good way to politely suggest it?”
Jim Griffin / Flickr While we’d like to believe all that facial hair is enough to keep Santa from spreading germs the reality is that the CDC and Governor Mills have yet to say Santa is exempt from the rules. So, if Santa isn’t wearing a mask we suggest you bring it up with him. We hear he’s a reasonable guy.
- “Ski lifts are socially distant, right?”

Being outside always feels a bit safer than being inside, but we’re just hoping everything stays as it is. If no, you can bet you’ll be seeing up on the roof with skis pretending that it’s Sugarloaf.
- “How can I convince the kids that the only Maine adventure we need is a visit to Reny’s?”

- “Does heating oil count as a gift this year?”
jeepersmedia / Flickr As we spend significantly more time at home we’re requiring a whole lot more heat. And that means more oil, which means more money. If you’re anything like us, you’ve wondered if perhaps the kids might like some oil this year as a gift. What’s better than being cozy?!
- “Speaking of gifts, how much is too much bread to give people?”
stephee / Flickr Bread baking has become an actual hobby these last few months. So, is there a problem if baked goods become an actual present? We say no, so if you know us be prepared!
- “Please! Let’s have some snow!”
Susan Bell / Flickr While we often hope to avoid heavy snowfall, this year we just don’t care. In fact, if it means the kids and whatever family is visiting will get out of the house we’ll take as many inches as we can get!
- “Things this year might not be exactly the same as other years, but at least we’re in Maine!”
coreytempleton / Flickr It’s true that this year feels a lot different than last Christmas. We might not be surrounded by the same people and we might be missing some folks. But, the good news is that we’re in Maine. And that will always be enough to get a smile and warm feeling from us.
