South Dakota is full of hidden gems – and Moccasin Springs is one of them. After being closed for several years, the property that contains the springs has been revitalized and re-opened to the public. Now an incredibly unique oasis, it’s one hidden gem worth seeking out. Take a look:

In the town of Hot Springs, you’ll find Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Spa.

Opened in 2019, the spa is centered around Moccasin Springs, warm mineral springs that come out of the ground through a natural red rock formation in the shape of a moccasin – hence the name.

Though the spa itself was recently opened, stories about the springs have been passed down for more than a century. It’s said that indigenous people soaked in the springs’ warm waters, which are believed to have healing powers.

The springs aren’t the spa’s only notable feature, though. The grounds also include the historical ruins of the Hot Springs Hotel, which burned down decades ago.

When renovating the property for the spa, great care was taken to maintain the hotel’s ruins – the end result is a one-of-a-kind oasis.

All in all, the spa has four pools, including the Moccasin Pool, which is the original moccasin-shaped bathhouse pool.

Flowing straight from the earth, the waters in the Moccasin Pool have a temperature of 93 degrees. And unlike many natural springs, the water from Moccasin Springs has a pleasant scent and silky texture.

From the Moccasin Pool, you can swim to an adjoined larger pool with waters ranging from 88 – 90 degrees.

There are also two hot pools, which are fed by natural mineral springs. Nice and toasty, the water temperature in these pools varies between 98 - 102+ degrees.

Though the springs are the main feature of the spa, they’re not all the spa has to offer.

The grounds also include a yoga studio, massage rooms, a restaurant, and overnight accommodations.
