Haunted and historic often go hand in hand – and that’s definitely the case with the Windsor Ruins. One of the state’s most sought after sites, the ruins are frequented by locals and tourists alike. However, unbeknownst to many, it’s not only the living roaming the grounds of the famous ruins. Take a look:

The Windsor Ruins are tucked away in the tiny town of Port Gibson.

Among the state’s best known landmarks, the ruins are all that remain of Windsor, which was once the largest antebellum home in Mississippi.

Hauntingly beautiful, the site consists of just 23 Corinthian columns.

While there are no pictures of Windsor in its grandeur, there is a sketch, which is posted at the site, along with some background on Windsor.

However, the signage doesn’t tell you everything about Windsor. For instance, it leaves out that the site is believed to be haunted by several ghosts.

PMMarion/TripAdvisor According to local lore, the property is haunted by the ghost of a Union shoulder who was killed in the doorway of Windsor during the Civil War. Smith Coffee Daniell II, Windsor’s owner, is also said to haunt the grounds. According to one report, a visitor saw a man in period clothing, assumed it was a re-enactor, and approached to ask some questions about Windsor. However, as he got close, the “re-enactor” turned toward the man, smiled, and faded away.

The strange happenings don’t end there, though. It’s said that on some nights, sounds of a long-ago party can be heard.

Something else you won’t learn from the signage is that the Daniell family cemetery sits just a short distance from the ruins.

The cemetery contains 45 known markers, including that of Smith Coffee Daniell II.

Like the ruins, the cemetery is said to be haunted.

The spectral stories surrounding the historic graveyard mainly tell of mysterious lights that seem to float around the graves at nightfall.
