Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a top destination for adventurers in southern Nevada, and for good reason. The area boasts grand geologic features and towering sandstone peaks, the likes of which are unlike anything else in the state. One of the park’s most impressive features is Turtlehead Peak, which boasts mesmerizing vistas of Red Rock Canyon and the Mojave Desert. The trail to Turtlehead Peak is not to be taken lightly, but the view from the top is most definitely worth the effort.
The hike to Turtlehead Peak in Red Rock Canyon, although popular, is not an easy one. It climbs nearly 2,000-feet in about 2.5-miles, is widely exposed, and is very rugged. And yet, countless hikers brave it for the view at the top.

It’s easy to see why the trail’s difficulty doesn’t deter many. The wide-open views that you’ll be treated to along the trail, not to mention once at the actual peak, make it worth all the blood, sweat, and tears.

Due to its difficulty, it’s recommended that hikers start early in the day in order to avoid the extreme heat that comes with the middle of the day. If you can, save this one for winter or early spring.

The trail begins at the Calico Tanks Parking Lot. The beginning portion of the trail is pretty easy with minimal elevation gain. You’ll also pass by Calico Tanks during this section, a vibrant rock formation that has a fascinating history.

The trail amps up in difficulty, becoming narrow and steep when you first come upon the ridge. Markings for the trail in this section can be hard to find, as well, so be sure to have your trail map handy in order to stay on track.

Don’t give up! The views from Turtlehead Peak aren’t just good - they’re spectacular. You could be huffing and puffing with sore legs, but the endless vista at the top is guaranteed to put a smile on your weary face. Take some time to rest and really soak it all in.
