When the Stagecoach Inn in Texas first opened its doors in 1861, Texas had been a state for less than 20 years. So much has happened in the 150+ years since, but this resilient restaurant has endured it all.

After closing for a short time to renovate, this historic building has reopened for business and done so with a vengeance, more prepared than ever to provide delicious food and preserve the story of the location. Read more about the Stagecoach Inn and the amazing legacy it has allowed to live on below:

The Stagecoach Inn, situated on Salado Creek and surrounded by pecan and oak trees, was once a site for Native American villages. Later on, in the 1840s, buffalo hunters built a log cabin here before Salado became an official town shortly after.

In 1861, the “Shady Villa Hotel” was born. Salado was a major stop along the Chisholm Trail, so W. B. Armstrong erected a place for weary travelers to find food and refuge for the night. The inn saw all kinds of people - everyone from Sam Houston to Jesse James!

1943 was a year of rebirth. Dion and Ruth Van Bibber couldn’t bear to see all that history go to waste, so they restored the building and renamed it the “Stagecoach Inn.” Mrs. Van handles all the cooking while Mr. Van focuses his attention on greeting guests and making them feel at home.

Just because the inn has been renovated doesn’t mean the history has been washed away - you’ll still see plenty of artifacts from the early days. Take a look at this old cash register!

Now, on to the part y’all have been waiting for: the food. You can opt for the traditional four-course meal or order items ala carte, like this burger with sharp cheddar cheese and tomato-onion jam on a brioche bun.

Mrs. Van is also an expert at classic Southern dishes like turkey and dressing. This festive meal, complete with mashed potatoes and green beans, is served all day every Sunday.

They definitely don’t mess around when it comes to dessert. Try the triple chocolate cake - it’s devil’s food cake with a dark chocolate buttercream and chocolate crumble on top.

This is the Stagecoach Inn’s signature dessert, Strawberry Kiss. It’s vanilla ice cream with a meringue and strawberry sauce topping, garnished with fresh strawberries and a few little strawberry kiss candies. Fresh and decadent at the same time!
