When you think of Louisiana, waterfalls probably don’t come to mind. While we are known for our many beautiful bayous, swamps, and marshes, unfortunately, waterfalls just aren’t as often found around the Bayou State. Which makes this beautiful waterfall hiking trail all the more incredible, since it’s not every day you’ll get to hike to a gorgeous waterfall in Louisiana.
Formally known at the Sicily Island Hills Wildlife Management Area, the J.C. “Sonny” Gilbert Wildlife Management Area is a 7,500-acre natural oasis in Catahoula Parish.

There are a few different waterfalls within the trail systems at this wildlife management area, so after you’ve seen the Rock Falls, set off to find St. Mary’s Falls or the Sandy Bayou Waterfall.

Keep in mind that to legally gain access to a WMA, you’ll need a fishing or hunting license.

If you don’t have either of those, you’ll need a Wild Louisiana Stamp, which you can get here. For a one-day pass, it’s only $2 per person, which is a steal considering you could easily spend an entire day here and not see everything.
