Part of the Cypress Island Preserve, the lake is a perfect place to spend a day exploring some of the most beautiful scenery around. It’s one of the largest texting colonies for water birds and is home to beautiful birds like the anhinga, blue herons, egrets, spoonbills, and more.

But that’s not the only wildlife that calls the area home. When you visit, you’ll probably end up spotting several alligators, turtles, nutria, and other swamp critters.

One of the best features of the lake is all the different avenues you have to see it. If you’d prefer to stay in the car, you can see the lake via Rookery Road, but there’s also a levee trail that’s great for exploring the lake on foot.

You can launch your canoe or kayak into the lake to do a little solo exploration, or you can go on a swamp tour, which we would highly recommend!
