In the plains of Kansas, there aren’t many trees, and that has been a fact for a good while. When settlers were marking land and needed materials for fences, trees weren’t really an option, and these quarried stone posts became commonplace in the area.

For the most part, all of the stone posts will be here for years, as long as the land doesn’t change uses.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot one of the rare carved posts that are just gorgeous no matter which subject has been carved into these posts. This is art that should last more than a lifetime.

There are only a few, so keep your eyes peeled for when the posts look smoother and a little more clean, you may spot a diamond in the rough.

In addition to beautiful carvings, you’ll sometimes find engraved posts from pioneer days, where some of the original posts were placed as people marked their land and built their fences. They look much older and worn by dirt, wind, and rain.
