In Wilmington, Delaware, 169 years ago, a gorgeous Gothic mansion was built for a man by the name of Joseph Shipley. To this day, it still stands, though it’s been repurposed over the years.

Rockwood Park and Museum has been a proud member of the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.

Upon her death at 100 years of age, Mary left the house and surrounding land to her niece, who subsequently left it to a local church- who decided they didn’t want the property on their hands. From there, it went to Chancery Court - who subsequently deeded it to New Castle County.

The building was an example of modern architecture at the time, taking inspiration from old buildings of centuries past.

It is said that the ghosts of past residents wander the halls of the museum and the grounds of the park to this day.

The furnishings in Rockwood are all-original, having been purchased by Joseph Shipley himself in England and shipped to the states in the 1850s.

Throughout the year, the museum maintains an air of charming spirit, from fun and festive decor in autumn to gorgeous holiday lights in December.
