When you think of Maine certain images may come to mind. Bright red, fresh lobster and rocky coastal views, perhaps. Or maybe lots of snow and wind! We like to think of the things that make this place lovely and to us, that’s the views over the ocean. If you not only love imagining the Maine coast but loving getting out to enjoy it you’ll want to head to southern Maine for this stroll along the water.
The Marginal Way in Ogunquit dates all the way back to the mid-1920s. Local conservationist and former State Legislator, Josiah Chase, retired in York purchasing a 20-acre strip of land running and donated it to the town just before his death in 1928.

From development to hurricanes, the path has been through a lot. But it’s survived throughout it all, which is a testament to just how much people love this special piece of coastal land.

The Marginal Way runs for 1.25-miles along the rocky shore from the starting point on Shore Road all the way to Perkins Cove.

While the path is not terribly wide, there’s plenty of room for people to explore at their own pace.

The path is mainly flat, which means this is a great way to simply stroll the area without exerting a ton of effort.

But if you do get fatigued you can stop for a break on one of the 39 benches along the way.

The benches are also a great way to extend your time on the coast. Sit down, look out over the water, and be grateful that places like this exist here in Maine.

The path follows the coast but also features plants and shrubs. You’ll also love the views of some of the large homes here. Just imagine waking up to these views!

As you get to Perkins Cove you’ll find the Marginal Way light looking out over Ogunquit Beach. While not operational, it’s a fun photo opportunity. And there’s a little slot for donations towards the upkeep of the path.

If you time your visit right you’ll be able to take in one of the incredible sunsets here, as well.
