With so many chain stores popping up in every urban location, old-time general stores have become near-extinct, leaving behind a huge void in countless rural areas. Fortunately for the small community of Hoover, this is not the case, as this old-time general store has made a big comeback:

Located in Butte County, Hoover is a small, unincorporated community that, like many early SoDak towns, has gradually lost many of its residents that once called the town home.

Unlike many of the deemed ghost towns, however, Hoover is different, as it still boasts a working general store that serves locals and tourists alike.

Originally built in 1902, the old Hoover Store is the only still-running business in town, and is owned and managed by a couple who bought a nearby ranch in the 1970s and acquired the deserted building in the process.

Thanks to the couple (Jim and Leona McFarland) re-opening the shop in 1976, the community now has a place to buy everything from food and everyday staples like milk, bread, and eggs…
