There’s always something special happening here in Maine, but it’s not every day we have access to one of the most famed celestial events in the world! While we’re used to the idea that seeing the Northern Lights means traveling to a place like Iceland or Scandinavia, we could not be more thrilled at the prospect of seeing the display right here!
The Northern Lights are also referred to as the Polar Lights or the Aurora Borealis. While they’re typically visible in Arctic regions in countries like Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, this week we’ll have a chance to get in on the action!

They’re normally visible due to magnetic activity and solar winds which we don’t get to see a lot of here.

But! A huge G3 solar storm on December 10, along with some increased magnetic activity, means the lights could be visible anywhere above the green line on this map. So along with Maine, any state above South Carolina has a chance to catch them.

The Northern Lights can come in many different colors, including different hues of pinks, purples and greens. But here we’re expecting mostly green.

While the lights will probably be faint, if you’re in an area with minimal light pollution you’ll be in the best position for viewing them.

We recommend anyplace away from larger towns and cities. So those in The County and even the Rangeley area are in a great place!

The solar storm that allows all of this to happen will take place from December 9th through December 11, but December 10 is expected to be the most impressive display. A great way to make sure you can spot it is to be sure you’re looking at the northern sky. And if you see something, let us know!
