Here in Minnesota, being outdoors in the summer is a way of life. With snow always just around the corner, it’s important to soak up every little bit of sun. That’s why Minnesotans excel at all things outdoorsy. Camping, hiking, boating, biking, and swimming are just a few of our favorite summertime activities. But there are plenty more that are less common. For example, when is the last time you had a sunny Minnesota picnic? There are many great spots to have a picnic in Minnesota — including your own backyard — but sometimes it’s fun to try out somewhere with a little more scenery. That’s why we recommend a picnic trip to Frontenac State Park. Here, you’ll find one of the most picnic-perfect views in the entire state. Read on below to see the view for yourself.

Frontenac State Park is a wonderful 2,300-acre park in southeastern Minnesota. It’s about 65 miles southeast of the Twin Cities along the Mississippi River.

The park is a great spot for a weekend trip. There are 58 drive-in campsites and 19 electric sites for those in RVs. The campground is on the top of the bluff, so you’ll have easy access to wonderful views!

There is plenty to do at Frontenac besides camping. This park preserves a long, tall bluff that rises above the Mississippi River. The bluff is covered in tall grasses, wildflowers, and a mixed forest of maple, elm, oak, and other trees.

You can take in the beautiful surroundings along any of Frontenac’s trails. There are about 13 miles of hiking trails throughout the park. Some are flat, while others include long sets of stairs.

If you are able, following the stairs to the top of the bluff is an absolute must. The view of the Mississippi River from above, surrounded by lush green riverbanks, is truly spectacular.

Once you get to the top of the bluff, you’ll find what might just be Minnesota’s most perfect picnic spot. There’s a picnic where you can settle in. The flat, grass-covered ground also makes a great place to spread out a blanket.
