Let’s face it, Alaska is basically one big ol’ mountainy mountain range. Everywhere you look there’s a mountain poking its head up at you. If you live in Alaska you can’t escape it, you may as well embrace it… and maybe climb to the top of one of them just so you can say you have. Of the hundreds of mountains in our beautiful state, here are 9 really cool, jaw dropping peaks that deserve the extra attention, maybe not for their height, but for their shape or their really cool name. Wikipedia Let’s just start with the obvious. Denali is the highest mountain peak in America! This glorious mountain is a sight to behold and quite frankly it is hard to miss. So you’ve probably seen it even if you’ve meant to or not. Denali is located in Denali National Park, and there are so many ways to view this stunning mountain!
- Mount Foraker

- Mount Blackburn
Wikipedia Mount Blackburn can be found in the Wrangell Mountain Range. The mountain range is in St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in America, and it’s a volcano. That’s quite the mountain if you ask me. Known as the “King of the Wrangells,” this stunning volcano can be summited with St. Elias Alpine Guides.
- Mount Fairweather
Wikipedia Look at this beauty! Mount Fairweather is one of the highest coastal peaks in the world! It’s huge to say the least, which is a good thing because we “technically” have to share it with Canada seeing as it sits on the border and all. Learn more about the mountain that got its name because it can only be seen in fair weather.
- Mount Bona
Wikipedia Mount Bona is a stratovolcano, which means it’s not a huge threat, but it could be if it felt like it. Do you remember what happened to Mount Saint Helens? Well let’s just say this guy could do even MORE damage than that stratovolcano did. Mount Bona is actually the fifth largest independent peak in all of the United States, too.
- Mount Saint Elias
Wikipedia We also have to share Mount Saint Elias with Canada because it sits right on the border. This particular mountain is known for its impressive vertical face; the summit climbs 18,008 feet in just 10 miles. Whoa! Mount Saint Elias is the second highest peak in both Canada and the United States; and it sits in the largest national park in America.
- Mount Hunter
Wikipedia This bad boy is located in Denali National Park, only 8 miles away from Mount McKinley. Mount Hunter also goes by a second name, Begguya, which means child of Denali in Dena’ina lingo. Pretty cool, huh? Even though it’s the “child” of Denali, this mountain is considered more technically difficult to climb!
- Mount Bear
Wikipedia Mount Bear is located in the Saint Elias Mountains and is also one of the top 20 highest peaks in America. Because it is less technically difficult and very remote, it doesn’t tend to get climbed a lot. However it is known for some pretty unbelievable backcountry skiing or snowboarding!
- Mount Shishaldin
Wikipedia Mount Shishaldin looks really intimidating and to top it off, it’s an active volcano located in the Aleutian Island chain. It’s also the most cone shaped mountain in the world! The Alaska Volcano Observatory has a ton of great information about this stunning volcano.
