Whether you live on Oahu or are vacationing in Waikiki, it is a definite fact that the island’s leeward coast is severely underrated. The beautiful windward coast is known for incredible hiking and lush jungle, Honolulu is the center for business and culture, and the north shore is a haven for surfers, but the west coast is often overlooked for other, more accessible parts of the island. It’s a true shame because this slice of coastline is home to some simply stunning spots — including the undeveloped, end-of-the-road Makua Beach.

The second-to-last beach on the leeward coast’s Farrington Highway, Makua Beach is one of the most off-the-beaten-path beaches on the island of Oahu.

Tourists rarely see this place — no tour buses go here, and most people who make the effort to drive up the coast stop at Makaha Beach, a popular big wave surfing beach in the winter months.

After the small town of Makaha, development ends and you won’t find any traces of civilization — even the road narrows here.

But that’s what makes us love Makua Beach so much. Backed by the towering Waianae Mountains and the lush, verdant Makua Valley, this stunning stretch of sand is never crowded and as undeveloped as they come.

With remarkable rock formations and tide pools on either side of the beach, Makua Beach is the place to go if you want to make a splash and get away from it all.

Be careful, though — since Makua Beach isn’t protected by an offshore reef, the surf can get rough during the winter months. The ocean floor also drops off fairly suddenly here, so stick close to shore and admire the peace and serenity.

Because this beach is so far removed from the rest of the island, it’s the perfect place to go for a relaxed family beach day. Pack up the cooler and the car, bring lots of sunscreen, and enjoy a day spent swimming, surfing, and strolling. Plan to stay for sunset, because watching the sun slip beyond the horizon here is heavenly.

So, what are you waiting for? Make a splash at this undeveloped gem on your next Oahu beach day, then tell us, what is your favorite destination on Oahu’s leeward coast? Perhaps it’s one of these underrated spots?
