When people think hiking and biking destinations in the US, North Dakota is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. What many people don’t know is that the Peace Garden State is home to the longest single track trail in the country. Not only that, but it’s also one of the most unique and beautiful hikes out there. Gear up and set off either on a bike, foot, or horseback on this amazing North Dakota trail.

The trail is 144 miles long and goes through the Little Missouri National Grassland and parts of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

It’s called the Maah Daah Hey Trail and is famed for its impressive views and great biking opportunities.

You don’t need to mountain bike to take the trail, however. People enjoy this trail on foot and on horseback. The parts of the trail that go through the Theodore Roosevelt National Park are for hiking and horseback riding only.

Throughout this trail, there are campgrounds and other facilities to stop at along the way if you plan on taking the whole thing on. There are also some water crossings, so make sure you are prepared for those.

Along with viewing the majesty of western North Dakota’s scenic landscapes, it’s likely you’ll also see some of the area’s famous wildlife such as bison.

Wild horse herds, prairie dog towns, coyotes, and many other creatures are also viewable from the trail. It truly feels like you’re hiking through untouched wilderness.
