At over 48-feet-tall and weighing 40 tons, the wind-carved Balanced Rock dominates the Southern Idaho scenery. The formation gets its name from the fact that it seems to be precariously balanced on a pedestal only 3-feet by 17-inches.

Balanced Rock looks like it could topple over at any moment, and it makes for a truly one-of-a-kind photo op. It’s just a short scramble to the base of the rock and standing next to it, you can truly appreciate the sheer size of this geologic marvel.

It’s amazing to think that Balanced Rock is the product of millions of years worth of erosion. Made out of the same type of rock that forms parts of Jarbidge Canyon and Bruneau Canyon, it’s the ultimate work of art by Mother Nature.

Surrounding Balanced Rock is a small park that’s well-shaded and delightfully quiet. It’s home to a few picnic tables and shelters, along with some primitive campsites for self-support camping.

Seeing this unique wonder with your own eyes is a must! To find the park from Buhl, take Main Street and turn right on Burley Ave., then turn left on Castleford Road. Continue for four miles and keep right onto E 3700. Follow the signs and park at the base of the rock to start the climb to the top.
