Minnesota is home to many impressive hiking trails! These paths cross through big cities, small towns, and endless stretches of Minnesota’s natural areas. They lead through prairies and forests, along rivers and lakes, and to spectacular overlooks. You’ll find many wonderful examples of each type. But one of the state’s most breathtaking trails happens to be a short path to a gorgeous overlook of Minnesota’s highest waterfall. You will never forget your trip to this northern Minnesota landmark. Take a look:

Grand Portage State Park is a beautiful park in northern Minnesota. It’s on the North Shore, about 150 miles from Duluth along Highway 61. Though it is far from most Minnesotans, it is well worth the trip.

The park is known for its immense beauty. Being on the North Shore, some trails lead to beautiful, distant views of Lake Superior. In the summertime, with the green trees framing the view, it is nothing short of spectacular.

But some trails, like the 1.2-mile High Falls Trail, lead to the park’s most famous landmark: the High Falls of the Pigeon River.

As the tallest waterfall in Minnesota, the 120-foot-tall High Falls is truly a sight to see. As you walk along the easy boardwalk trail, you’ll hear the rushing water long before you see it.

Soon, you will come to an overlook with an incredible view of the waterfall. There is no sight quite like the rushing waters as they tumble over the cliff on their way to Lake Superior. The waterfall payoff is well worth the hike!

The High Falls Trail is open year-round, though it is easiest to visit from May through October. But if you do venture to the park in the winter, you’ll get to see a whole new side to the waterfall. The rushing waters will be silenced to a silent, frozen sheet.
