There are times when you’re hungry and just about anything will do. That’s when you head for tried-and-true pizza or something from the fridge. But then there are times when you need something truly comforting. That’s when you look to perfectly prepared home-cooked meals in cozy environments. This German restaurant offers all the comforts of home (as long as you’re used to home being in Bavaria!) without having to cook. And, there might not be a better place to enjoy authentic German food without a passport.
The Ausländer Restaurant in Fredericksburg offers a complete Bavarian experience!
management / TripAdvisor For more than two decades, the restaurant has been providing some of the most authentic Bavarian food you can find outside of the German state of Bavaria. You can expect huge portions of great food surrounded by decor and ambiance that you just won’t find anywhere else.
This place is certainly festive and those who love experiences that are just a bit over the top will be very happy here!

If you’re looking to enjoy a traditional Biergarten experience, look no further than their outside area. On a busy day you’ll find this hopping and bopping out here.

But while we love the indoor and outdoor vibes, the reason you come here is the food and it never disappoints. You can start things off with, what the restaurant calls the “German Snack.” You’ll have your choice of grilled sausage served with sauerkraut, cheddar and Swiss cheese on pumpernickel bread.

The menu is packed with traditional Bavarian dishes like Jagerschnitzel, which is considered the “hunter’s” schnitzel. It features a pork loin cutlet breaded and covered in authentic red wine mushroom gravy. All for $16!

Another popular option is the Local Sausage Sandwich. It’s made with a local beef and pork sausage served on a hoagie roll with sauerkraut, German mustard and melted Swiss cheese! You might have a hard time enjoying it for lunch one day and not returning the next.

And while the menu is packed, we love the specials they offer. This pork shank special is just one example of how well-thought out (and large!) each special is.

Lucky for us, there are lots of German eateries here in Texas. They’re hiding in some of the most unlikely spots. In fact, thousands of people visit a nearly deserted town in Texas to eat at this one Bavarian restaurant.
