If you’ve lived in Oregon for very long, you’ve likely experienced the traffic headaches of rush hour near Portland. Then there’s all the ongoing road construction, not to mention the tourists chugging along at 20 mph while hauling their huge RVs on Highway 101.

There might be some tricky traffic and terrible drivers out there, but luckily, the Beaver State only has a few roads that are terrifying in their own rights. There’s a stretch of Oregon Route 140 that’s white-knuckle driving. Check out the Doherty Slide!

The Doherty Slide is located down in the southeastern corner of the state, right on the Oregon/Nevada border. The ridge is part of the rim of an ancient volcano, and it rises more than 1,000 feet from the valley floor.

As you pass through the little town of Adel on your way to Nevada, you’ll make your way down the Doherty Slide and across the Guano Valley. It’s a stunning, vast stretch of empty land, and the vistas are amazing…but the drive can be pretty nerve-wracking.

As you approach this stretch of the highway, signs begin to warn you about the 8% grade.

Other signs warn you that you’ll want to slow down for the hairpin turns ahead.

You might want to pull over at the Doherty Hang Glide Launch spot to take in a scenic view of the valley below before proceeding down this scary stretch of road.

The two-lane road is narrow, and there’s no guardrail. This car is traveling just 17 mph as it approaches the curve ahead.

As you come around the hairpin turns, your passengers will be treated to some stunning vistas of the valley far below. You won’t see them because you’ll have your eyes glued to the road. After all, it’s 1,000 feet down.
