With so much history, it’s not surprising that Maine has so many spooky ghost stories. Some take place on rural country roads while other tales of ghosts take place in old museums or cemeteries. These are interesting to share around a campfire, but there are some stories that actually feel a little too real. The haunting tales coming out of this inn are a great example.
The Chapman Inn is located in the historic district of Bethel and was built back in 1865.

And while people love their stays here, the inn has another side. A haunted side. And the inn’s claim has been officially verified by actual ghost hunters!

In fact, the inn is the only one in western Maine to be officially “Certified Haunted!” The paranormal investigators hired by the inn believe the space to be haunted by at least two spirits, both of whom lived in the house before it was an inn.
One of the earliest owners of the home, William Rogers Chapman, had a daughter named Abigail who was never truly healthy. She didn’t leave the house often and as a result had no true friends. To care for her, he hired a companion. The two were inseparable until Abigail died at the age of 16.

Although, it seems even death did not separate them. When Abigail’s father died, he left the home to the caretaker who remained living there until she died in 1957. And according to paranormal investigators, she’s still there. Completely dedicated to her charge, she and Abigail are likely living as friendly spirits in the home today.

Visitors and employees at the inn have reported hearing footsteps without anybody nearby, female voices coming from empty rooms and cold spots even in the summer.
