A six minute drive from the South Carolina State House in Columbia will lead you to a river oasis that feels like a million miles from everywhere. Possibly the most peaceful place you can go in the Capital City, the Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park is a wonderful place to explore, whether you’re a resident of the area or just visiting.
It’s located on the banks of the scenic Congaree River and follows the river’s path for nearly 10 miles.

All told, it’s a great place to just get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air.

But there is also a wealth of things to do in the park, like visit the old water plant, now open with restored inner workings inside the building.

You can also certainly just take a nice, long walk — or a run. The paved path is wide enough to accommodate walkers, runners, and bikers.

The park also features some culture in the form of art installations. Grab a bench and ponder your thoughts on this wonderful piece.

Of course, you can always turn your visit into an adventure! Exploring the park could take hours. Bring plenty of water, especially in the heat of the summer.
