Deep within the towering trees of the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina there exists a series of shoals along a richly-colored blue waterway called Big Creek. Formally known as Big Shoals, this incredibly gorgeous stretch of the Big Creek exists a mere 20 minutes from the small town of Highlands, North Carolina (population: just under 1,000 residents).
The next time you’re in the area, the 1.3-mile out-and-back hike to the series of waterfalls along the Big Shoals is relatively easy. The adventure itself rewards those taking the time to seek it out with a visit to a deep blue waterfall known, ironically, as Secret Falls.

The irony, of course, is that with the Internet and our never-ending desires to seek out new and exciting adventures, this lovely spot is hardly a secret any longer.

At the heart of the Big Shoals, Secret Falls is five stories tall and can be seen from well above the forest.

As pretty as it is from high in the sky, you can rest assured, it’s as beautiful with your feet planted firmly on the ground as well.

The water depth is perfect for dipping your toes while you immerse your ears in nature’s soothing soundtrack of the water falling into the blue plunge pool at the base of the falls.
If you’re planning to hike this trail, then you should be aware there could be some added maneuvers you’ll have to negotiate. Water crossings, possibly muddy spots (after a rain), and some roots to scramble over make this one a challenge at times.

But the payoff — without a doubt — is completely worth the effort!

We’re sure the locals would love to keep Secret Falls a secret forever and ever. As a visitor to the area, you can do your part by leaving the falls and the trail in a better condition than you found them. If packing a picnic into the area, don’t forget to bring a garbage bag to remove your trash as you leave so you’ll leave no trace.
