The drive is called the Chan SanSan Scenic Backway. Chan SanSan is the Yanktonai Sioux word for the James River, which is the river you’ll be cruising along. No matter what time of year it is, this route is gorgeous.

Pretty much all of the route is on gravel roads. It begins right off of Highway 46 a little way south of Jamestown, ND and heads southbound down County Road 60.

Along the way you’ll pass by absolutely stunning places with plenty of views of water, gently rolling prairie hills, and farms tucked away in them.

There are multiple recreation areas along the way to stop for some outdoor fun or a quiet picnic if the weather’s right.

A few of the small towns you’ll pass through include Adrian, Dickey, and Grand Rapids, each with its own unique charm and beauty.
