The oldest purpose-built cinema in possibly the whole world is sitting right in Kansas, still running just like it should be. We’ve taken good care of this old building, and we hope it stands for years to come. Let’s see what’s going on at the old 1907 Plaza Cinema.
Today we venture out to Ottawa, Kansas, where an old building captures hearts every year. That building is the 1907 Plaza Cinema, and it is the oldest still-running purpose-built cinema.

While that’s quite a title, it really has been here for over 100 years of operation. Of course, they’ve had to fix and restructure things as renovations were necessary.

It was first named the Bijou, but was changed to the Crystal, and then later the Plaza in 1935. Since then, it’s been our beloved Plaza ever since.

It was briefly closed during the Great Depression and for the Covid19 pandemic but otherwise has been running this entire time just to bring movies to the people.

In addition to the beautiful exterior, the inside holds a miniature museum that will take you back to the days of old cameras, props from well-known films, posters, and scripts.

Though we mostly see new movies here at 1907 Plaza, it is available for private tours by appointment.

Unless otherwise posted, the cinema is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday or for private parties on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you’re not sure, call them at (785) 242-5555 with any questions about openings, holidays, or appointments.
