Petoskey, located on Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan, is one of the most charming areas of northern Michigan. There’s the lake, of course, along with gorgeous Victorian architecture, idyllic forests, and… multiple ghosts?

Well, according to legend, there are some undead locals in Petoskey, specifically at the Terrace Inn. The hotel, which has been around for over a century, has long been rumored to be home to three different spirits. You see, this beautiful Victorian-style inn was actually once two boarding houses until they were torn down to create the new Terrance Inn in 1911. However, it’s rumored that during construction, two workers died when a beam fell on them — and their spirits may have settled in at the inn once construction was completed. And that’s just one story about why the hotel is seemingly so spooky….

The Terrace Inn & 1911 Restaurant is an old, Victorian-style hotel boasting many quaint rooms, a busting restaurant, and, allegedly, several different ghosts. Employees and guests alike have had paranormal experiences here.

In fact, if you ask the front desk, they will provide you with a whole folder filled with people’s paranormal encounters while at the hotel. Any guest who experiences something, well, strange, is allowed to add their story to the book.

So who are the ghosts floating around the hotel? Well there’s a woman in white who has been spotted floating down the hallways, a man in tweed who appears often by the balcony, and a young boy who resides primarily in the basement, among other rumored apparitions.

Guests haven’t just seen these ghoulish figures, though. They’ve also heard disembodied voices and footsteps, felt cold spots, the usual.

Plenty of paranormal investigators have spent the night at this haunted hotel and they all agree — it’s crawling with spectral activity.

Don’t worry, though — as the hotel notes on its website, “No worries, as no demonic presence or other negative experiences have been observed.”

And if the idea of spending a night with the lady in white just seems too daunting, you can always grab a meal at the inn’s restaurant. Who knows… maybe you’ll still hear or see something while enjoying your meal in the safety of daylight.

The Terrance Inn leans into its haunted reputation, though, and regularly holds paranormal parties. Keep an eye out so your visit can coincide with one!
