Step into the ghost town of Rush to walk through what’s left of the abandoned ruins on the Rush Mountain Mining Loop Trail, where you’ll be met with historic tidbits and interesting sights along the way. Let’s learn about the town’s past as we hike along this fascinating trail.

The Rush Mountain Mining Loop may be the most unique hike in Arkansas.

Flickr/Dave Thomas This 3.6-mile loop is the walk-through tour of Arkansas’ most famous ghost town - Rush. You’ll find the trail at Ark.14 South, Buffalo National River, Yellville, AR 72687.

The trail is the perfect balance of gorgeous nature…

AllTrails/Alex Whitaker The loop can roughly be divided in half for two out-and-back trails. Go counterclockwise if you’re mainly wanting to tour the town with an easy stroll or travel clockwise to see Rush’s extraordinary scenic beauty. The latter is more challenging but the vista views and waters of Clabber Creek make the effort well worth it.

…and interesting historical tour.

AllTrails/Crystal Brewer During WWI, Rush was the most prosperous city in the state for its zinc mine. Unfortunately once the war was over the prices declined as did Rush. Today the trail passes the village’s original smelter, resident homes, and the Taylor-Medley General Store.

The trail even leads near the mines that turned Rush into boom town it once was.

AllTrails/Doug Neidholdt The zinc mines are closed for safety reasons but you can still see quite of bit of the original mining equipment used in the early 1900s.

The town may be gone but Rush is still an Arkansas gem to discover.
