Tucked away deep in the forest in the heart of West Virginia’s coal country is a quiet cove. It’s a beautiful, calm oasis in McDowell County, made even more picturesque by a quaint, arched footbridge that crosses the lake from shore to shore. The name of this charming spot? Berwind Lake.
Not far from War, West Virginia in McDowell County lies 20-acre Berwind Lake, the center of 85-acre Berwind Lake Wildlife Management Preserve.

But Lake Berwind is equipped with a Class-Q fishing pier and is a good spot to hook warm-water species like trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.

The lake also features cabin rentals, trails, and a picturesque footbridge that crosses the lake from shore to shore along the trail system.

It’s a quaint, arched, boardwalk bridge that feels like something out of a fairytale, both when you’re crossing it and when you’re looking at its span across the lake, backed by rugged mountains.
