West Virginia is the only one of the 50 states to have two panhandles. Typically, the Eastern Panhandle gets all the attention, maybe because of popular tourist attractions like Harpers Ferry. But the Northern Panhandle also has plenty of fun sites that are well worth a visit!
A famous attraction in the uppermost tip of the Northern Panhandle is the World’s Largest Teapot in Chester, West Virginia. It’s 14 feet high by 14 feet wide - that’s a lot of tea!
John Margolies/LOC via Wikipedia Chester itself is the northernmost point of West Virginia, and as such, is the northernmost point of the Southern United States. It’s actually the same latitude as parts of New York City/Staten Island.
As you head south from Chester, stop by the Weirton Area Museum and Culture Center.
Porthos7/Tripadvisor There you’ll find a plethora of local and unusual artifacts to help you appreciate this area.
The Northern Panhandle is also known for her bridges, particularly the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which is the largest suspension bridge of its time and the first to span a significant river west of the Appalachian Mountains.
Jack Boucher/LOC via Wikipedia The main span of the bridge (from Wheeling to Wheeling Island) is an impressive 1,010 feet.
Also in Wheeling is the must-visit Oglebay Resort.
Oglebay/Facebook It’s a historic 2,000-acre complex with many activity options, including a zoo, swimming, hiking, a spa, horseback riding, a ropes course, golf, gardens, and more.
Moundsville is another worthwhile stop on your tour through the Northern Panhandle.
Citallwic/Tripadvisor Visit Moundsville’s namesake, the Grave Creek Mound, and tour the on-site museum and archaeology complex to learn more about our state’s original inhabitants.
Then cross the street from the Grave Creek Mound to observe or tour the West Virginia Penitentiary, an old, gothic-style prison.
Carol M. Highsmith/LOC via Wikipedia It’s considered by many to be one of the most haunted prisons in the United States, and during the Halloween season it serves as the setting for the haunted attraction “Dungeon of Horrors.”
Here’s an interactive map of these locations, if you need one for your road trip! Oh, and if you’re looking for a great local place to eat along the way, try Bob’s Lunch in Moundsville.
