It’s pretty easy to love the wide open spaces and beautiful vistas that you’ll find in Capitol Reef National Park. One great way to see some stellar views is by taking the Burr Trail, a winding, twisty road that makes its way right through the park. There’s an half-mile-long stretch of switchbacks with some steep sections and sharp curves, and you’d better have nerves of steel if you’re planning to make it through.

For some of Utah’s most spectacular scenery, drive the Burr Trail from Boulder down to Bullfrog Marina. It’s about 68 miles from start to finish, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon.

The dirt road switchbacks climb 800 feet up the side of the mountain. The grade is steep and the curves are sharp. Before you embark on this journey, you’ll want to make sure that your vehicle is up to the task.

This stretch of the Burr Trail is not suitable for large RVs or vehicles pulling trailers.

While much of the Burr Trail is paved, the switchbacks and the other portions of the road inside Capitol Reef National Park are not. During inclement weather, they can be impassable, even for vehicles with four-wheel drive.

Before you head out on this remote stretch of road, make sure you have plenty of gas, extra water, and a spare tire. Check the weather forecast in advance.
