Cape May, New Jersey is a charming small town that’s believed to be America’s oldest vacation resort destination. The little city by the sea is home to several spots said to be haunted including the Emlen Physick Estate and Cape May Lighthouse. Both are worth a visit but you can actually spend the night at haunted Hotel Macomber.

Hotel Macomber was built at the turn of the 19th century, making it nearly 120 years old.

Legend has it that a former waitress haunts the dining area and kitchen of the on-site restaurant, Union Park Dining Room. Disgruntled and dressed in shabby clothes, she’s known to make the lights flicker and silverware move about.

Union Park Restaurant/Facebook It’s said that she worked in the hotel during the Great Depression and occasionally stole food. One tragic day, she choked to death on pilfered poultry. Though the story is spooky, don’t be scared off. This top-rated restaurant is one of the best in the area for a romantic date night.

Another hotel ghost is a guest that doesn’t want to leave. She’s known as the Trunk Lady.

Hotel Macomber/Facebook Absolutely in love with Cape May, she would vacation at the Hotel Macomber seasonally in the 1940s. She’d bring with her a steamer trunk, which she’s said to drag around to this day. It’s also said that she likes to rearrange the furniture. She frequents her favorite room in June and November, staying for just a few weeks. Guests say that she has a calming energy but occasionally causes mischief. She’ll turn lights and radios on and off and may borrow an outfit or two from the closet. The good news is, she always returns them.
