According to historical records, the production of pig iron began at Sloss Furnaces in 1882. In fact, this blast furnace was once the largest manufacturer of pig iron in the world. Sloss Furnaces closed in 1970.

Many people have supposedly seen ghostly apparitions, one of which was James Wormwood, a former blast foreman that treated his workers terribly. Mr. Wormwood worked the graveyard shift, and it’s believed the workers banded together and threw him into the molten fires of the furnace because of their mistreatment.
