If there was ever a summer perfect for exploring our own backyard, it’s definitely this one. But considering Rhode Island is a spectacularly beautiful state with a lot to offer, that isn’t a bad thing. This year, check out a few towns you’ve never visited and hike a few trails you’ve never hiked. The Sin and Flesh Brook Trail is a great place to start.
The Sin and Flesh Brook Trail is located in the Fort Barton Woods in Tiverton.
Brittany Tainsh / alltrails.com Once the site of a Revolutionary War fort, the space is now a public park at Lawton and Highland Avenues.
This trail is only about 2.4 miles long (the full loop), and it’s a pretty easy trek.
Sylvia Del Toffoli / alltrails.com This is a great nature walk for beginners and advanced hikers alike.
You’ll pass several small streams before you reach Sin and Flesh Brook, a little-known body of water here in the Ocean State.
Miranda Dapont / alltrails.com As the name might suggest, this little brook has an interesting history.
Before the Revolutionary War was even a thought, this was the site where the body of Zoeth Howland, a pious Quaker, was discovered.
Niles Callahan / alltrails.com Howland had moved to Dartmouth from Plymouth, where his religious beliefs led to conflict and persecution from the Puritans. He was heading home to Dartmouth one evening when he was ambushed here by six natives, murdered, and terribly mutilated.
Only one of the men involved in Howland’s murder was ever identified in court records.
Sylvia De Toffoli / alltrails.com The unnamed brook where his body was discovered became known as Sinning Flesh Brook, or Sin and Flesh Brook today.
Of course, the current state of this area is substantially more pleasant.
Jason Burns / alltrails.com At its highest point, you can take in some incredible views, and the entire trail is nice and peaceful.
Add this easy, beautiful trail to your summer bucket list.
Niles Callahan / alltrails.com It’s definitely worth seeing.
