Sweetwater County and the Green River area of Wyoming was one of the most important coal-mining districts in the West. One town, Winton, became a hotspot. When the industry moved along, though, Winton was abandoned.

The town was originally called Megeath, after the Megeath Coal Company. When Union Pacific bought out Megeath, the name was changed to Winton. It was a thriving town until the mines closed in the 1950s.
