Christmastime in Pittsburgh is all about traditions – ice skating around the twinkling tree at PPG Place, marveling at the city awash in lights on Light Up Night, and strolling through town to admire the decorated windows. One long-time tradition, however, will celebrate its final Christmas in 2020. If you want to get a last look at the Tree of Lights in Pittsburgh, now’s your chance.

Editor’s Note: The Tree of Lights will return in 2021 (and, as far as we know, for many Christmas seasons after). The announcement was made on December 21, 2020 that Duquesne Light and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will work together to ensure the future version of the tree remains just as big but is more energy efficient. Plans will also be developed to ensure the park grounds remain preserved during the annual set up and take down of the Tree of Lights.

For more than three decades, Christmas in Pittsburgh has meant the annual lighting of the Tree of Lights at Point State Park. The 80-foot tree was just as breathtaking up-close as it was…

As it greeted us when we emerged from the Fort Pitt Tunnels. A ride on the Gateway Clipper Fleet and Grandview Park both offered sensational views of the shimmering tree, too.

The Tree of Lights always debuted on Light Up Night, beginning in 1988, and will turn off for the final time just a few weeks from now. The tree will remain lit until January 7, 2020, so you have some time to get downtown to snap photos and reminisce.

Duquesne Light has provided the tree since the beginning. It will be retired to help preserve the grounds on which Fort Duquesne sits.

However, Duquesne Light is working with Point State Park in an attempt to find another way to preserve the grounds while still keeping it merry and bright during the holiday season.
