No matter what time of year it is, it’s always a great time to think about going for a drive through the countryside. And here in West Virginia, some of the most beautiful areas you can pass through are farmland.
There’s something so beautiful about mountain farm country: lush, green fields and meadows rolling gently upward into mountain ranges that then turn sharply toward the sky.

And one of the best places to see views like these in West Virginia is on a leisurely drive through the predominately agricultural Monroe County.

The Seneca Trail (U.S. Route 219) enters Monroe County where the road crosses Second Creek, just south of Ronceverte. If you are so inclined, drive 33 miles through gently rolling hills and farmland to the town of Union and beyond, all the way to Peterstown. You’re in for a treat; in addition to miles of gorgeous scenery, you’ll want to keep an eye out for several interesting historic sites that you’ll be driving past, including monuments…

Or here’s another option. Instead of heading all the way down to the Peterstown edge of Monroe County on U.S. Route 219, you can turn east on State Route 3 in Union and venture through Gap Mills (a great place to stop for lunch!) and past Sweet Springs Resort.
